Joep Hupperetz is a dramaturg and theatre professional who received his Master of Arts in Theatre Studies from the University of Amsterdam in 2021. From a young age, Joep developed a love for theater in all its many forms. This resulted in years of singing lessons, acting lessons, and stage experience varying from local amateur productions to professional national musical productions. During his studies, he gained valuable experience in the opera and theatre world, including work as second assistant director and assistant dramaturg at Opera Zuid. He also served as dramaturg and librettist for IDIOSYNCRATIC at Dutch National Opera’s Opera Forward Festival, where he demonstrated his flair for both classical and contemporary storytelling.Between 2017 and 2019, Joep worked for two seasons as a producer with JONG DeLaMar.

 

Since 2020, he has been resident dramaturg at Opera Zuid. For Opera Zuid has been working as a dramaturg on MTOTO (OZ, Intro In Situ & Via Zuid), Lady in the Dark (OZ & Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg), Eternal Road: Der immer ewige Weg von Kurt Weill (OZ, Théâtres de la Ville de Luxembourg & Via Zuid), Der Schauspieldirektor, Le Villi / Silenzio, The Impressario (Buxton International Festival), Die Dreigroschenoper (OZ, Toneelgroep Maastricht & Philzuid) & Atman (OZ, Dutch National Opera & Nederlandse Reisopera). For Opera Zuid he worked as an assistant director on Fantasio, Bluebeard's Castle and as Dramaturg & Assistant Director on Les Enfants Terribles (OZ, Dutch National Opera & Nederlandse Reisopera).

Alongside his work at Opera Zuid, Joep has shown his versatility in projects such as Salieri’s Armida at Opera Nijetrijne (2023). For Het Brecht Trio he adapted Brecht’s Die Rundköpfe und die Spitzköpfe for Muziekgebouw aan 't IJ  & Kurt Weill Fest Dessau. Since 2025 he has been working with Netherlands Lyric Opera Festival as a director. For their first edition he staged several Opera Scenes ranging from Rossini duets to Verdi. For the 2026 festival he curated, staged, and designed It Started out Like a Song: A Sondheim Concert in co-production with Lyric Theatre @ Illinois.

 

For the 2026-2027 he works as a Dramaturg on the lastest Jonathan Dove Community-Opera Uprising (OZ, Dutch National Opera & Het Geluid Maastricht). In the spring he collaborates with Steef de Jong on a new Dutch reworked Frau Luna (OZ). In the autumn he collaborates with tenor Tim Stoter on his lied program Serenata a Napoli. Revivals this season included an adapted version of Eternal Road: Der immer ewige Weg von Kurt Weill and the recently world premièred Atman.
